Lavender is known for its calming scent, but is it calming or harmful for your kitty?

The Plant

Fresh lavender plants are considered mildly toxic to cats by the ASPCA. The compounds linalool and linalyl acetate are found in the plant. If a cat eats a large amount, it can cause nausea and vomiting, but it's rarely fatal.

The Essential Oil: Only Danger

Essential oils are highly concentrated. Lavender essential oil is dangerous to cats. Cats lack the liver enzyme needed to break down these compounds. Exposure (through skin, ingestion, or strong diffusers) can lead to liver damage and respiratory failure.

Using Diffusers

If you use a lavender diffuser, make sure it is in a well-ventilated room and your cat can leave if they want to. Never apply essential oils directly to your cat's fur.

Conclusion

Love the smell of lavender? Keep the fresh flowers out of reach and be extremely cautious with concentrated oils.
